A gentle reminder ...

The goal of this blog initially was for Mr. Mc to show his students and friends what he doing while in Pennsylvania and DC in 2011. Now it's being used as a place for him, travelling colleagues and former students to discuss edumacation and history related "stuff" as well as ... well, anything which pops into his head. Mr. Mc would never knowingly embarrass either the school he loves or the family he is devoted to. By joining in the discussion, he expects the same of you.

  2. I think the painter is trying to show the birth of a free country by having the sun come out of the clouds and shine upon Washington and his men.

  3. The atmosphere of the people on the boat looks serious.

  4. This picture makes George Washington look like sort of an idol considering he's at the center of the picture striking a heroic pose and everybody else seems to be doing something less important or looking up to him

  5. MF-What do you see specifically that makes you say that?

CD-GW as a rock star and all the others around him are his roadies and back up singers? ;)

  6. MB says ... To me it looks like the sky is brighter on one side than on the other side. Maybe the artist did that to symbolize where they have been and where they are going.

  7. WC says … What stood out to me is how hard all the people around him (George Washington) are working to get chunks of ice out of the way. It really shows how much this war means to them, and just how much they care for their leader. They were willing to risk their lives and it paid off.

  8. DK says … The guy holding the flag behind George Washington must have some importance. I'm surprised they made it across the Delaware, considering how many people are in the boat and how rough the water is.

  9. CS says … There is lots of ice so therefore it is very cold and there are a few people just pushing ice away so they can move forward.

  10. PR says … it looked really cold & that it seemed like everyone had a job to do.

  11. ML says … I noticed on the painting that the artist was probably trying to emphasize GW by putting all the light around his area.

  12. NT says … I think that the lack of uniformity and no set uniform, along with the wild horse make the "army" look makeshift and untrained; also, the painter is German (just sayin').

  13. JN says … from the post Boston Massacre (Can We Trust Paul Revere?) [I’m putting this here so we can keep the conversation going on one thread. Mr. Mc.] I also believe that the dog in the middle is a symbol of something. But what? I noticed a couple of things such as the buildings on the right look cleaner than the buildings on the left. In my opinion, the smoke in the middle is just a way to use up space because it doesn’t have a really significant meaning. I also noticed that the buildings on the right are in the dark, when the buildings on the left are in the light. I cannot make up my mind why so if you have any ideas I would like to hear them.

  14. SM says … Even though the flag looks worn and kind of sad, all the people in the boats have a look of determination and it also looks like they are about to do something really important, and possibly dramatic.
